Several children at a youth hostel in Malmedy, Bévercé were affected by food poisoning, leading to the activation of an emergency plan in the night between Thursday and Friday. The children, who were Secondary 2 pupils from a school in Thuin, started experiencing symptoms such as vomiting and diarrhoea on Thursday evening. The number of affected children increased overnight, with ten eventually requiring hospitalisation. The other affected children stayed back at the hostel under surveillance. The healthy children were accompanied by an ambulance as they were transported back home.
Many emergency services went to Bévercé, in the town of Malmedy, during this night from Thursday to Friday. The emergency plan was triggered because several children were victims of food poisoning.
It happened at the Malmedy youth hostel, as reported by Vedia. Secondary 2 children from a school in Thuin began to be sick during the night and to show serious symptoms of vomiting and diarrhoea.
More specifically, the first symptoms appeared on Thursday evening, but it was during the night, around 4 a.m., that the emergency plan was activated since more and more children were concerned.
Ten of them had to be hospitalized according to the mayor of Malmedy, who specifies that seven ambulances and two Smur were sent to the spot. Four children were sent to Verviers, four to Malmedy and two to Eupen.
And regarding twenty children, sick but less seriously, remained at the hostel under surveillance.
As for the children without symptoms, they were moved to the Malmundarium before their return this Friday to Thuin. The school had sent 139 people including 124 students to Malmedy.
Return by bus… with an ambulance
This Friday morning, the “healthy” children had breakfast and then returned around 10:30 a.m. towards Hainaut. In the three coaches that had taken them to Malmedy since the three drivers – like all the adults who accompanied the children elsewhere – were not sick.
“The coaches are accompanied by an ambulance because symptoms can occur during the journey. And then there may be a psychological factor, ”explains Jean-Paul Bastin, the mayor of Malmedy. “And on site there will be an ambulance and a doctor to welcome the children. And hospitals in the region are warned in prevention. »
During the morning, the twenty sick children – joined this morning by three additional children who started symptoms late – were gradually recovered by their parents.
