Increased risk of thrombosis due to cancer and cancer therapy?
A direct connection between stroke and tumor diseases seems plausible: it is known that active cancer increases the formation of blood clots, which can then block cerebral arteries.
On the one hand, the danger comes from the tumor activity itself. On the other hand, cancer therapy and inflammatory effects can also increase the tendency to coagulate.
However, the connection that has now been confirmed is not yet proof that cancer actually promotes strokes. It is also conceivable that both diseases have common risk factors. Smoking and obesity increase both the risk of a stroke and colon cancer.
“However, this finding cannot explain the increased risk of haematological [Blut-]explain cancers, since most of them are not associated with smoking or other cardiovascular risk factors,” the authors write.
Common risk factors might also not explain why the effect is significantly higher in younger stroke patients than in older ones. A reverse distribution would be expected here, since risk factors tend to add up in old age and have a greater impact than at a young age.
