Nearly 80% say they have “good” or “excellent” career prospects, and more than 84% say the industry is “growing,” according to a new survey of 302 security professionals. ” or “thriving.”

However, the Chartered Institute of Information Security (CIISec) report reveals that the sector is still plagued by problems such as stress and work overload. 22% of those surveyed work more than the 48 hours a week prescribed by the UK government, and 8% work more than 55 hours, which the World Health Organization says marks the boundary between safe working hours and dangerous working hours.

When asked what keeps them up at night, the top two sources of stress for cyber professionals are daily stress and workload (50%) and being the victim of a cyberattack (32% ).

Security professionals fear that the economic climate is leading or has already led to an increase in cyber risks, particularly fraud (78%) and insider threats (58%).

The majority of respondents agree that the impact of the economic climate will be felt most by small businesses and less fortunate individuals, who have fewer resources to protect themselves once morest threats and are less able to resist a successful attack and to get over it.

“It’s good to see that cybersecurity professionals are positive regarding their career prospects,” says Amanda Finch, CEO of CIISec, “The cybersecurity industry is booming. It offers many opportunities for people of almost all ages. horizons, and the need for cybersecurity is greater than ever as threats continue to rise – making a critical function essentially recession-proof. However, the sector cannot rest on its laurels: it must do more to ensure that talent is properly supported and not starved. This will involve equipping them with the right skills and attracting new blood to the sector so that teams are not subjected to a excessive pressure.”

Among other findings, respondents cited money/compensation as the number one factor driving people to leave security jobs, followed by opportunities/possibilities for progression. The poor working environment is also an important factor: poor or ineffective management, boring or little variety in work, the atmosphere or problems with teams and colleagues are all among the main reasons why people interviewed leave their job.

Interestingly, 71% of those surveyed say staffing is the biggest challenge they face in security, as the sector continues to battle a skills shortage and educate colleagues. This figure compares to processes (21%), where organizations strive to implement best practices that will reduce risk. Only 8% of cybersecurity professionals believe technology is a challenge.

“Traditionally, the cybersecurity industry has been viewed as a very technical career. However, as we can see, it is much more than that,” adds Finch. “It requires social, managerial, investigative and even financial capabilities. The sector must begin to raise awareness of the possibilities of using different skills in order to broaden the appeal of cyber security. At the same time, the sector must give priority to the people within it. This means creating an environment in which they want to work and thrive. This is how the sector can continue to grow and cybersecurity professionals can lead long careers. and well filled.
