Curious scene at the Ski Cross World Cup on the Reiteralm (Austria). In her quarter-final run, the German Johanna Holzmann reaches the finish line with too little speed and brakes completely so as not to land painfully on the flat terrain. But because it goes down more than a meter vertically from the edge, she can’t just climb down and drive to the finish.

For a few seconds, Holzmann looked for a solution, which was: Squeeze past the gate on the right side of the jump and then simply drive around the jump. The Swiss Saskja Lack had long since reached the finish line at this point, but there was no danger for Holzmann from behind. The only remaining competitor, the Canadian India Sherret, had already fallen and was no longer in the race. As a result, the German qualified second in her quarter-finals for the semi-finals and ended up in seventh place.

In general, the demanding course on the Reiteralm made for a strange race. After various falls in qualifying, it was recently unclear whether the women would even start. Compared to their male colleagues, the female drivers had too little speed on some jumps to fly into the intended landing area. When the decision was made to start, there were a few places where the riders deliberately slowed down so that there was no jump at all.

Swiss women share podium

Despite the injury-related absence of team leader Fanny Smith, the Swiss coped well with the difficult conditions and finished third to sixth. Third place was taken twice.

Talina Gantenbein and Margaux Dumont took each other out of the race in a rencontre in the final. The regulations stipulate that in this case both will be ranked 3rd. The victory went to the Canadian Brittany Phelan, who was ranked top for the first time following 16 podium places in the World Cup.

For the 25-year-old Gantenbein, it was the sixth 3rd place in her World Cup career – the third this season. In contrast, Dumont, who is four years younger and is competing in her first World Cup season following winning the overall European Cup last year, has only had two 10th places as her best results so far. Saskja Lack and Sistine Cousin rounded off the Swiss team’s strong team result with 5th and 6th place.

Fiva’s trouble

In the men’s final it also looked like Switzerland would be on the podium before Alex Fiva, who was in second place, briefly lost control before a jump and then drove past the gate. At the finish he was also warned by the jury, which the Graubünden man acknowledged with sarcastic applause. The 38-year-old therefore missed out on regaining the lead in the overall standings. The Swiss is 18 points behind Canadian Reece Howden with three races remaining.

Jonas Lenherr, who took 2nd place on Saturday, appeared to have won his quarterfinal heat, but was subsequently moved back due to a threader and finished thirteenth. The race was won by the Frenchman Youri Duplessis Kergomard, who celebrated his first victory in the World Cup. (abu/sda)
