Eugenio Suarez hit two home runs, Ketel Marte homered and had four RBIs and the Arizona Diamondbacks humiliated the Texas Rangers 14-4 on Wednesday.
The Diamondbacks won the first game of this series between the two finalists of last year’s World Series by jumping on starting pitcher Cody Bradford’s throws (5-3).
Bradford ultimately allowed eight earned runs on nine hits in 3.2 innings.
Randal Grichuk hit a two-run homer off the right-hander in a three-run first inning, Suarez added a solo homer in the second and Marte hit a three-run homer in the fourth.
Adrian Del Castillo hit a three-run homer of his own in the fifth inning before Suarez closed out a four-for-four day with a solo homer in the seventh.
Arizona (82-64) had a record 13 extra-base hits — 16 overall — to tie San Diego for first in the race for the best runner-up spot. The Diamondbacks also moved within 4.5 games of the Los Angeles Dodgers in the West.
Dylan Floro (6-4) pitched one inning to earn the win in relief of starter Merrill Kelly in the fifth. Jordan Montgomery worked three innings to earn his first career save.
Marcus Semien hit a solo homer and had two RBIs for the Rangers, who are now 7.5 games back in the race for second with 16 games remaining.
Marte hit Bradford’s first pitch for a double, Corbin Carroll followed with a triple and Grichuk hit his 200th career homer. It was the 33rd time this season Arizona scored at least two runs in the first inning.
Suarez led off the second with his 27th homer and Marte made it 5-0 with an RBI single. Marte gave Arizona an 8-2 lead in the fourth with his 31st homer.
Cramps for Kelly
Kelly had been solid since being reinstated from the injured list with a right shoulder strain on Aug. 11.
The right-hander was good until he started cramping in the fifth inning. Kelly gave up Semien’s two-out solo homer in the third and Nathaniel Lowe’s single in the fourth.
Kelly left the game in the fifth inning. He allowed three runs on four hits.
Veterans return for Rangers
The Rangers will at least have veteran pitchers Jacob deGrom and Max Scherzer back in action. Rangers manager Bruce Bochy confirmed that deGrom will take the mound Friday, while Scherzer will start Saturday.
deGrom will make his debut after missing more than a year due to Tommy John surgery. He has not made a start since April 28, 2023.
Scherzer has been out for about six weeks with a shoulder injury. He also missed games after offseason back surgery. He is 2-4 this season with a 3.89 ERA.
Four points produced for Lane Thomas
Lane Thomas had four RBIs and the Cleveland Guardians held on to their bullpen for a 6-4 victory that completed a three-game series sweep against the Chicago White Sox in the afternoon.
Austin Hedges hit a solo home run for the Guardians.
The White Sox suffered their 15th straight home loss — a team record — and have lost 17 of their last 19 games, and were swept for the 24th time this season.
With a 33-114 record, the White Sox are approaching the record for most losses since the turn of the 20th century, 120, set by the New York Mets in 1962, their inaugural season.
Thomas drove in four runs on two singles to the infield with two outs. On each occasion, the Guardians had runners on second and third, and they were able to cross home plate because they were already on the run.
Thomas, who finished the game with three hits, is batting .405 (15-for-37) with three home runs and nine RBIs in September.
Steven Kwan had two hits and scored two runs for the Guardians.
Lenyn Sosa and Bryan Ramos each had two hits for the White Sox.
Nick Sandlin (8-0), the first of four relievers for the Guardians, struck out four times and earned the win. Starter Matthew Boyd allowed four runs, one earned, and six hits in 4 1/3 innings. He struck out nine.
The Guardians relievers allowed only two hits. Emmanuel Clasé gave up a single in the ninth inning but still got his 44th save of the season.
The loss went to Davis Martin (0-4), who allowed five runs and six hits in three innings.
