The new season in the lower house of football kicked off at the weekend with the first round of the Admiral Landescup – with one or two surprises. The biggest sensation was achieved by Union Ried/Riedmark: The Mühlviertler club, which was crowned champion in the 1st class Northeast last season and was promoted to the district league, knocked Micheldorf, an Upper Austrian league team, out of the competition (3:2).
“I knew that anything is possible in football. We had a perfect day, were able to surprise and catch the opponent off guard. My team has made history, it has never been represented in the state cup before,” said Ried coach Amarildo Zela. This despite the fact that the omens for the team of the former Vorwärts Steyr legend were not exactly positive: seven players had left the club following the promotion in the summer. Before the new league starts, the second round of the state cup is scheduled for next weekend. Curiously, the Zela team will face Haidershofen, a team that is also an opponent in the East District League.
However, Micheldorf was not the only Upper Austrian league team whose exit was sealed in the first round of the cup: the cup season is also already over for Bad Ischl (2:3 once morest Landesliga-West club Kammer) and Pregarten (2:4 at Landesliga-East club Traun).

Another club from the state’s top league, Bad Leonfelden, narrowly avoided elimination yesterday with a 2:1 win once morest East Regional League representative Putzleinsdorf. The underdog was in the lead until the 91st minute, but then Stepan Krunert (91st) and Klaus Kapl (94th) gave Bad Leonfelden some cause to celebrate.
