Three-Team Trade: Blue Jackets Acquire Provorov from Flyers in Blockbuster Deal

The Columbus Blue Jackets have acquired defenseman Ivan Provorov from the Philadelphia Flyers in a three-team trade that also includes the Los Angeles Kings, according to TSN’s Chris Johnston.

The Kings will keep 30% of Provorov’s salary. In the end, the Kings also receive defenseman Kevin Connauton and forward Hayden Hodgson.

The Flyers get Sean Walker and goaltender Cal Petersen back. They also get their hands on prospect Helge Grans and a second-round pick from the Kings as well as a first-round pick from the Blue Jackets, 22nd in the upcoming draft.

The primary trade saw Philadelphia trade Provorov and Hayden Hodgson to Los Angeles in exchange for Cal Peterson, Sean Walker, Helge Grans and the Kings’ 2024 second-round pick. Columbus then got Kevin Connauton from Philadelphia in exchange for a first-round pick in 2023 (22nd overall) and a conditional second-round pick in the 2024 or 2025 NHL Draft. Then, the Blue Jackets then got Provorov from Los Angeles in exchange for Connauton.

Provorov, 26, scored six goals and 27 points in 82 games for the Flyers last season.

Originally selected with the seventh overall pick in the 2015 draft by the Flyers, Provorov made his debut for the team in the 2016-17 season.

Provorov is entering the fifth season of a six-year, $40.5 million contract that was signed in September 2019. He will become an unrestricted free agent when the contract expires at the end of the 2024 season- 25.

The Yaroslavl, Russia native was the first NHL player to refuse to wear a Pride-themed jersey last season, citing his “religious beliefs.”

In 532 career NHL games, all with the Flyers, Provorov has scored 65 goals and 217 points.
