Three Students from Antheenad Special School Selected for Special Olympics in Berlin, Germany

Pala: Three students from Antheenad Special School have been selected to participate in the Special Olympics to be held in Berlin, Germany from June 17 to 25.

Tinu Monsi in swimming, Harichandana PM in handball and Alina Shaji in football were selected from five camps held in Delhi, Haryana, Gujarat and Jharkhand as part of the training from 2021 onwards. After the camp in Delhi, they will return to Germany along with other Indian team members. Staff Sister Joveena of Santinilayam is also with the children till Delhi. About 7,000 differently-abled athletes from 190 countries participate in the Special Olympics. There are 26 sports.

261 people from India are participating in the world’s largest sports event for the differently abled. 24 children including two coaches from Kerala are participating. Six children, a coach and Principal Sister Reena participated in the World Games Special Olympics held in Los Angeles, USA in 2015. Swapna Joseph bagged four bronze medals in powerlifting and Sangeetha SK one bronze in the competitions that saw participation from 177 countries.

Started in 1991, the school now has a staff of 36, including the principal, Sister Annie. 153 children are getting education. Band, Dance, Music, Chendamelam, Tabla and Organ are trained here. There is also a band troupe consisting of 22 children.
