A large hole occurred, and it seems that it will take several days to recover… Russia and the West raise doubts regarding each other
(Istanbul = Yonhap News) Correspondent Cho Seong-heum = Gas leaks occurred in three Baltic submarine pipes of the ‘Nordstream-1’ and ‘Nordstream-2’ gas pipelines connecting Russia and Germany for one day in a row, Archyde.com, TAS News reported on the 27th (local time).
Norstream AG, the operator of Northstream, said on the same day that damage was confirmed in three subsea pipelines of Northstream.
Shortly before that, the Swedish Maritime Transport Authority said it had identified two leaks in Nordstream-1.
In addition, the day before, the Danish Maritime Transport Authority banned ships from sailing in the surrounding waters, saying that there was a gas leak in Nordstream-2.
“It is unprecedented for three gas pipelines to fail at the same time,” Northstream AG said.
Sweden’s National Earthquake Network said two massive energy releases were recorded in the area just before the leak was discovered.
He also explained that it is difficult to find a cause other than an explosion for an energy release of this magnitude.
Nordstream-1 has stopped supplying gas since the beginning of this month, but it is said that there is still a large amount of gas inside.
Comprising of two gas pipelines, each with an annual supply capacity of 27.5 billion cubic meters, Nordstream-1 has been supplying gas from Russia to Germany since 2011.
Russia announced that it would stop supplying Nordstream-1 gas for three days from the 31st of last month, but stopped supplying gas indefinitely, saying that it discovered a leak on the 2nd, one day before the completion of the inspection.
Northstream-2, which was completed at the end of last year to supply additional gas to Germany following the Nordstream-1, has been inoperative because of sanctions from the West following Russia’s invasion of Ukraine this year.
Russia and the West expressed their suspicions regarding the accident, saying that it would not be a simple accident.
Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said: “This is a matter of energy security for the entire continent. The situation is very worrisome.”
When asked if the leak was due to sabotage, he said, “I can’t rule out anything right now.”
On the other hand, in the West, as Russia has continued to cut energy supplies to Europe in response to Western sanctions, the leak is also suspicious of Russian intervention.
The Danish energy authority said, “A large amount of gas is leaking. It is not a small crack, but a huge hole.” “It’s hard to imagine that a leak like this was an accident,” he said.
“There are signs of deliberate damage,” a security official in Europe said.
“The leak is a terrorist attack by Russia and an act of aggression once morest the European Union,” Ukrainian presidential aide Mikhail Podolyak tweeted.
