Three questions to Meriem Ben Boubaker, vice-president of the International Alliance of CFOs at La Presse: “The financial manager is a strategic advisor”

Met on the sidelines of the signing ceremony of the statutes of the International Alliance of CFOs, which saw the light of day last Friday in Tunis, Mariem Ben Boubaker, Vice-President of the Alliance and representative of the Tunisian Association of Management Controllers and financial managers (Cogeref), tells us regarding the missions of the new organization which will focus, in the coming period, on the challenges of the financial profession.

As was announced at the conference, the International Alliance of CFOs is the only organization in the world that brings together so many financial managers, it’s a real challenge…

We reasoned not only in relation to the number of organizations that will be members of this alliance — we are 12 signatory international organizations — but also in relation to the number of members affected by this alliance.

I think we are more than 15,000 members internationally. It is a very nice community of financiers who were able to come together around the same objectives. It is true that the organisation, through the various member associations, is present on three continents but really, we are part of one world. And as the saying goes, “we don’t inherit the earth from our ancestors, we borrow it from our children”. It is true that we do not share the same language and the same culture but what unites us, makes us speak the same language, is our financial community.

What is the mission of the newly elected Board of Directors for the coming period?

We had just held a board meeting to deal with this issue. And as agreed at this meeting, you have to start step by step. At the very beginning, the members of each association had to be convinced of the added value provided by this new organisation. Because, it is quite normal for a member to ask questions regarding the interest of being part of an international group.

I would like to recall here that the Alliance is listening to all the members whether they are in Tunisia or elsewhere in other countries. Then, this new organization will work to promote a new model that will increasingly take into account sustainability commitments, but also the challenges of digitalization. Which is very important.

We’re going develop a single model that will bring everyone together and that will be shared. It should be remembered that this organization is the result of three years of work. It is true that during this journey, he there were some small discrepancies, but in the end, everything that was recorded in the statutes, everything that was announced today, everyone agrees. Moreover, a good-natured atmosphere prevailed during this meeting. So, in short, we are counting a lot on the contribution of this Alliance to our community.

During the conference, it was also a question of emphasizing the challenges faced by CFOs in this particular economic context. What will be the new role of the financial manager within the company?

You know, the financial manager is a strategic advisor.
Moreover, the theme “the transformation of the finance function” chosen for the symposium which was held yesterday, is not fortuitous. It is true that the CFO must master several aspects, namely the accounting, finance and risk management, but it also has a role to play in terms of corporate sustainability and extra-financial reporting. Within the company, financial managers have become “business partners”.
