Three Pakistani powerlifter sisters bag 15 gold medals in championship

Three Pakistani sisters have won a total of 15 gold medals at the International Powerlifting Championships.

Sable Sohail, Twinkle Sohail and Veronica Sohail bagged five gold medals each at the 2024 Asia Pacific African Combined Classic and Equipped Powerlifting Championship.

Pakistan Speaking to Independent Urdu, Rashid Malik, General Secretary of Powerlifting Federation and coach of the three sisters, said: ‘Sabel Sohail, Twinkle Sohail and Veronica Sohail have set a unique world record in weightlifting as it has happened for the first time worldwide. Three powerlifter sisters have competed together in an international powerlifting competition and all won gold medals.’

Sable Sohail, the eldest of the three sisters in South Africa, while talking to Independent Urdu, said, “I won four gold medals in the 52 kg category classic and one gold medal in aquaped, Veronica won four classic and 57 kg category gold medals. won one gold medal in equipped while Twinkle has won four gold medals in classic and one in equipped in 84 kg category.’

Sibal Sohail said that this championship was held in South Africa, it did not include only Europe, there were players from the other three continents. It is also called Mini World Championship in which around 250 men and women compete Women Powerlifters were participating.

“We three sisters were chosen from Pakistan following which we joined it and we were able to succeed here because of the prayers of the whole of Pakistan and we are grateful for the prayers of the Pakistani people.”

Sibal also thanked her coach Rashid Malik and said, “Our coaches have been training us in powerlifting for the last 10-12 years, due to which we are in a position today to win the Mini World Championship as sisters.” And get the gold medal.

“We were training for this championship for two years and it was very difficult because we had to train every day and there was no rest. We also worked a lot on diet because Twinkle and Veronica had some I had to gain weight but I had to lose weight and so our diet routine was also different.’

He said that it was not easy to send the three sisters for the championship as it cost a lot of money in which the Punjab Sports Board provided them tickets, kits, track suits and joggers etc. while the federation paid for their stay there. For hotels, dope test fee, party fee, hotel stay fee and other expenses have been borne.

He said that the three sisters have been invited by the Pakistani High Commission in Cape Town for a feast where the business community is organizing dinners and events in their honor. .

What is the next championship preparation?

Coach Rashid Malik said that the three sisters will return and prepare to participate in the Commonwealth Powerlifting Championship to be held from October 4 to 12, 2024 and ‘if the Punjab government and the Punjab Sports Board decide to participate in this championship. So we have provided full financial support to them, so I have full hope that they will show their best performance there as well.

What are the achievements so far?

Coach Rashid Malik said that ‘Sabil Sohail is the gold medalist and record holder of the Pakistan Powerlifting Championship from 2014 to date.

In 2017, he won four gold medals in the Oceania Pacific Powerlifting, and in 2018, he won a bronze medal in the Asian Bench Press Championship held in Dubai.

According to Rashid Malik: ‘Veronica Sohail is currently competing in the 57 kg category.

In 2018, she represented Pakistan for the first time in the Asian Powerlifting Championship in Dubai and won the gold medal in the under-18 category. She used to go and get the silver medal.’

According to Rashid Malik, Twinkle Sohail is younger than Sable and older than Veronica, but she is more experienced than them.

She is the first female powerlifter from Pakistan who participated in the 2015 International Powerlifting Championship in Muscat City of Oman, where she also became the first female athlete and won a gold medal.

Twinkle then participated in the 2017 Oceania Pacific Powerlifting Championships in Singapore and won four gold medals in the 71 kg category.

In 2018, Twinkle won the gold medal for Pakistan at the Asian Powerlifting Championship in Dubai.
