The FIFA electoral commission announced on Monday that it had received four candidates for the elections to its presidency scheduled for May 29 and will now “evaluate” them.
These are the nominations of Joseph Blatter, current president and great favorite, the former Portuguese international Luis Figo, the Jordanian prince Ali bin Al Hussein – one of the vice presidents of FIFA -, and Michael van Praag, president of the Dutch Federation .
The FIFA electoral commission must validate in regarding 10 days the candidacies that were deposited before Thursday at 8 p.m. (Argentina time).
The suitors must have had an active role in the administration of football, either nationally or internationally, for two of the last five years, and have the sponsorship of at least five of the 209 federations that make up FIFA.
Controversy with Figo
The 2000 Ballon d’Or winner assured in response to the claims of some of his opponents that he has the support of six national federations to run for the FIFA presidency, which establishes the support of five countries as a requirement to be a candidate for the position.
“I am happy to confirm that my six sponsors have been sent to FIFA this week before the end of the established deadline,” said the former Portuguese star of Barcelona and Real Madrid on his Twitter social network account.
Hours following the Portuguese announcement, another of the candidates, Jordanian prince Ali bin Al Hussein, 39 years old and vice president of FIFA, also announced that he had obtained the endorsements.
“I have the honor of having received the endorsements that allow me to enter the race for the presidency of FIFA,” he wrote on AliforFifa.
Joseph Blatter, 78 years old and at the head of the international federation since 1998, is the great favorite for victory.
Michael Van Praag, 67 years old and president of the Dutch federation, has had no problems meeting the two criteria, who revealed his six supports: Belgium, Sweden, Scotland, Romania, Faroe Islands and Holland.
