According to information from the United States National Institute of Health (NIH), varicose veins are swollen, twisted veins that can be seen under the skin and usually appear on the legs.
Symptoms of varicose veins include one or more bulging, bluish veins, swelling, and pain in the legsfeeling of heaviness in the legs and feet, itching around the vein or veins, changes in the color of the skin around the vein or veins, night cramps, among others.
Poor circulation is one of the main causes of its appearance because the valves within them deteriorate, which allow optimal blood flow.
According to the medical encyclopedia MedlinePlusSome risk factors are:
- Advanced age.
- Being female (hormonal changes from puberty, pregnancy, and menopause can lead to varicose veins; in addition, birth control pills or hormone therapy may increase the risk).
- Being born with faulty valves.
- Obesity.
- Pregnancy.
- History of blood clots in the legs.
- Standing or sitting for long periods.
- Family history of varicose veins.
- Regular physical exercise. Exercising promotes better blood circulation in the legs, which helps pump blood that has pooled in the veins.
- Put your legs up. Keeping your legs elevated above your heart will help improve circulation. This reduces the pressure in the veins and gravity will help blood flow freely to the heart.
- Compression socks. Wearing these stockings is favorable because they squeeze the legs, which helps the veins and muscles to move blood more efficiently.
Varicose veins operation
The criteria for intervention on this pathology is given by medical personnel. Taking into account data shared by the European Center for Aesthetic Surgery, “Receiving a blow to a leg with varicose veins in which a large amount of stagnant blood accumulates can be highly dangerous.”
In that order of ideas, the recommendation is to do it when there are unbearable ailments or injury accidents.
On the other hand, specialists at Hospital Mesa del Castillo, in Spain, consider that currently this type of operation tends to be secondary, so it is not always recommended. Instead, you can resort to injectable treatments, although the variety is extensive and that means that it can also become experimental.
In addition, the fact of removing a varicose does not guarantee that they will not appear once more. Román Escudero, Director of the Angiology and Vascular Surgery Service of the Hospital de la Santa Creu i Sant Pau in Barcelona, comments in Infosalud what “In 97% of patients, varicose veins have a genetic origin and, since these factors that predispose to their appearance cannot be eliminated, following surgery their reappearance is inevitable in most cases.”
Else, If they are veins that are not relatively prominent and their signs are few, it is not advisable to undergo the operation as such.
Finally, people may resort to changing their lifestyle, making it their task to try to maintain a healthy weight, engage in moderate physical activity, and avoid sitting or standing for long periods of time.
