U.S. health authority the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reported three suspected cases of bird flu among poultry farmers on Friday. Three people in Colorado, USA, are suspected of being infected with the H5 avian influenza virus. “There is no evidence of an unexpected increase in influenza cases in Colorado or other states affected by outbreaks of H5 avian influenza in cattle and poultry,” the health agency said. All three experienced mild symptoms.

Workers at poultry farms culling animals infected with H5N1 avian influenza became infected. The CDC sent a team to Colorado to support the investigation. The cases are part of a widespread outbreak of H5N1 avian influenza, which is circulating among wild birds worldwide but has also infected poultry and several mammals, including dairy cows in the United States.

There, outbreaks of avian influenza in dairy cows are of particular concern. In March, U.S. authorities reported the first outbreak of the H5N1 virus in dairy cattle. Since then, 139 cattle in 12 states have become infected.

Scientists worry that exposure to the virus on poultry and dairy farms increases the risk of the virus mutating, which might increase the distance between people.

American biotechnology company Moderna received a US$176 million investment from the US government in early July to promote the research and development of avian influenza vaccines.
