Three more cases of bird flu confirmed in Alberta

The Canadian Food Inspection Agency says avian flu has been detected in three other communities in Alberta.

The agency said the highly pathogenic H5N1 strain of bird flu was confirmed on Sunday in a small flock in Two Hills County. It has also been confirmed in Wainwright and Lethbridge counties.

Avian flu was first detected in Alberta in poultry farms last month.

Bird flu is not a significant public health problem for healthy people who are not in regular contact with infected birds, according to the agency.

She also added that these cases are a reminder that bird flu is spreading across the world and anyone with farm animals should adopt good biosecurity practices to protect their poultry and prevent disease.

The most recent bird flu epidemic began last year in Europe and has since spread to the United States and Canada, devastating commercial farms with its very high death rate.
