Three debuts of “MMLAB Space” will take place at the Museum of Energy and Technology Culture

In the spring of this year, the Laboratory of Art and Science (MMLAB) together with the Museum of Energy and Technology announced an open competition of stage artworks for artists of various fields. Organizations invited to propose new and creative ideas, which will be implemented in the museum space with the help of MMLAB mentors.

“One of MMLAB’s strategic directions has always been to help young creators gain creative experience, meet audiences, and be noticed by critics. By running the debut program, we aim to fill the niche of open invitations specifically for young creators, and by offering creative and production mentorship, we aim to help them discover their voice, understand the functioning mechanisms of culture and the art field, and successfully integrate into the performing arts community,” says MMLAB manager, producer dr. Rusnė Kregždaitė.

Artists were invited to submit ideas for works for specific spaces of the Museum of Energy and Technology. The interior of the museum is a great non-traditional venue for performing arts, allowing you to boldly experiment with forms.

“The museum is a space that brings together people of different ages, different professions and interests. A theater performance allows you to look at the present as if from outside, connect the present with the past, and even encourages you to look into the future from the corner of your eye. It seems to us, as the viewer, a unique opportunity to muse such an experience. Therefore, we highly value the cooperation with MMLAB”, says Mykolas Bistrickas, director of the Museum of Energy and Technology.

The debut program will begin with a contemporary opera by Lukas Butkaus and Jonas Kuprevičius “The Sailor”. Based on a play by the mysterious Portuguese author Fernando Pessoa, the work tells the story of three sisters who stay awake at night by their dead sister’s urn and share their dreams while waiting for the dawn. One of them tells about a sailor who finds himself on an island after a shipwreck and creates a new reality in his dreams. October 30 6 p.m. the creators of the presented opera explore the border between reality and fantasy, delve into the themes of loss and pain. Creative team: L. Butkus, J. Kuprevičius, Elena Marija Veleckaitė, Salomeja Petronytė, Liepa Ribokaitė, Ła Zemeckytė, Vaidas Bartušas, Julius Kuršis. Mentor – composer Agnė Matulevičiūtė.

In a one-part performance “Point” the sketch will be invited by the director of the youngest generation, Ieva Tamoševičiūtė. At the center of the dreamy story is the relationship between a man and a woman who chose euthanasia, through which the themes of life, death, meaning and love are explored. The play is inspired by a true story that happened in the Netherlands, when a young woman, not yet thirty years old, was euthanized at her request due to mental illnesses that had been untreated for more than 10 years: chronic depression, anxiety and personality disorder. October 30 8:30 p.m. the presented sketch of the performance invites us to compare the differences between euthanasia and suicide and to explore the existence of a person who has decided to end his life. Creative team: I. Tamoševičiūtė, Orestas Razums, Nikita Kiriuchinas, Vaiva Barzdenytė, Ieva Kalvaitė, Simonas Lunevičius, Edgaras Varkulevičius. Mentor – actor and director Gediminas Rimeika.
