“The flags are at half mast,” said the mayor of Saint-Robert, Gilles Salvas, in an interview with LCN.
This scene even marked the responders of the emergency services, according to the mayor.
“It marks the whole population,” said the man who offered his condolences to the families of the victims.
According to Mr. Salvas, several accidents occur on route 239 each year. The state of the roadway would not be in question in that of Sunday, but this road is always considered hazardous for its users, regardless of the time of year, in particular because of its “dangerous curves”.
Mr. Salvas believes that the lack of manpower on the roads of Quebec might contribute to the increase of the risks of accident.
“We hear that security is important, but often the Sûreté du Québec is understaffed (…) we insist on them.”
According to him, “you have to patrol the roads to make people safe”.
“Fatal accidents like the one last Sunday. We cannot forgive ourselves,” he adds.
As the municipality does not have jurisdiction over this road, he suggests working in collaboration with the Ministry of Transport, the regional deputy and the Sûreté du Québec.
He also proposes to impose stricter speed limits in order to reduce the number of accidents and increase safety.
“The municipality wants to work with everyone there to help secure this curve, which is seriously dangerous.”
