At least three people have died in Grenada following Hurricane Beryl struck, bringing the death toll in the Eastern Caribbean islands to four on Tuesday.
Grenada’s Prime Minister Dickon Mitchell said in a news conference broadcast on social media that “possibly more” people had died on the island and neighbouring Carriacou.
The figures come following Saint Vincent and the Grenadines reported one death on Monday from the hurricane, which has reached Category 5 status.
Mitchell said they had not received any details on the situation in Carriacou and Petite Martinique because they had not been able to establish communication with those islands the day before.
“The situation is grim,” said the prime minister, who explained that there was no electricity and that the hurricane had caused “almost complete destruction of homes and infrastructure.”
Eye of the storm
The eye of the hurricane entered through Carriacou and Petite Martinique with Category 4 winds.
The Caribbean Community (Caricom), which includes Grenada and Saint Vincent and the Grenadines, will hold a virtual meeting today to assess the damage and design a collective response.
Caricom Chairman and Guyana President Irfaan Ali said the Barbados-based Caribbean Disaster Emergency Management Agency (CDEMA) is already working to mobilize and coordinate assistance.
Beryl is heading for Jamaica on Wednesday and is also threatening the southern Dominican Republic and Haiti, according to the U.S. National Hurricane Center (NHC).
The first hurricane of the Atlantic season remains a dangerous system with maximum sustained winds of 270 kilometers per hour (165 miles per hour).
