According to official information, three people were killed when a firefighting plane crashed in the bush fire area in northeastern Australia on Saturday. The cause of the crash is not yet known, said the Queensland State Fire Service (QFES). The region has been plagued by fires for weeks. The Queensland Fire and Emergency Services said it had chartered the aircraft for an observation flight.
The plane had taken off from Toowoomba in southeast Queensland, not far from Brisbane, and was on its way to Mount Isa in the northwest of the huge state, which covers a good 1.7 million square kilometers. Shortly before its destination, the plane crashed in the outback near the town of Cloncurry.
The bushfires in Queensland have been raging since around mid-October. Drought, heat and strong winds encourage their spread. “We respond to natural disasters like a family here in Queensland,” the fire department wrote on Facebook and X (formerly Twitter). The loss of human life during an air operation is therefore felt equally by everyone.
