At least three people were killed and 18 others injured when a bomb exploded in a market in northwestern Pakistan on Monday, police said, in a day marked by violence with at least 44 dead in insurgent attacks and clashes with security forces in the south of the country.

“At 11:35 local time (06:35 GMT) a bomb exploded in the middle of the Razmak bazaar, killing three people and wounding 18 others,” Rehan Ullah, the head of the local police station in this town in the province of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, told EFE.

The source said the explosion took place when the market was at its busiest, and that most of the injured were able to receive treatment at a local hospital.

Six more seriously injured people were taken to a larger hospital, Ullah said.

Security forces

The source added that security forces have already cordoned off the area where the incident took place and have launched a search operation for the suspects.

No insurgent group has yet claimed responsibility for the attack, although insurgent attacks in the northwestern province of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa are often claimed by the main Pakistani Taliban group, the Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP).

Attacks in this area of Pakistan have increased significantly since the Taliban took power in Afghanistan in 2021.

The victims of the blast add to the at least 44 deaths reported in the southern province of Baluchistan in the past 24 hours, as a result of several insurgent operations and clashes with security forces.
