In a new episode of violence in Cauca, three brothers were brutally murdered on the night of October 21 while they were traveling in a truck on the road. The victims, identified as Ronaldo Valencia Trochez, Nayive Valencia Trochez and Juan Sánchez Trochez, were members of the Cerro Tijeras indigenous reservation and one of them was reportedly pregnant.

According to the Institute for Development and Peace (Indepaz), Colombia has experienced 58 massacres so far this year, with Cauca, along with Valle, Nariño and Antioquia, being one of the most affected departments. In Cauca alone, ten massacres have been reported in 2024.

Almost simultaneously, an attack directed against the Military Forces was registered in El Patía. In this incident, an explosive charge was activated that caused damage to a vehicle that was passing through the area. Brigadier General Federico Mejía affirmed that military operations will continue in the department.

This attack, along with other recent violent incidents, appear to be part of a harassment plan in response to Operation ‘Perseus’, which seeks to regain control in areas affected by illegal armed groups. General Erick Rodríguez, in command of the Southwest Joint Command Number 2, assured that the pressure on these groups will not decrease, despite the attacks.

With 1,400 men deployed, the Military Forces remain firm in their commitment to restoring security in Cauca, while violence and suffering in local communities continue to increase.
