Doha: 10 crore passengers have traveled by metro in three and a half years. Doha Metro has become the most used public transport system by locals, expatriates and visitors to travel to offices, schools and tourist destinations. Since the commencement of the service till date, passengers who have attended 13 local, regional and international sports tournaments including FIFA World Cup, Emir Cup, Arabian Gulf Cup, FIFA Club World Cup, African Super Cup and FIFA Arab Cup have been ensured safe journey.
1,84,16,355 people traveled in the metro during the FIFA World Cup held last November-December. The record for daily passenger numbers during the World Cup was on November 24 – 827,000 passengers. 51 percent used metro to go to stadiums. The busiest metro station is Mishreb, the largest and transit hub. On December 2, 4,05,000 passengers disembarked at Mishreb.
Lusail QNB station is second. The station was used by 2,90,000 people on December 18, the national day and the day of the World Cup final. Doha Metro service started on 8th May 2019 creating a revolutionary change in the transport sector. The service, which started with 13 stations on the Red Line in the first phase, was expanded to 37 stations on the Red, Green and Gold lines by September 2020. Doha Metro has gained a place in the minds of the people by providing the fastest and safest journey at the lowest fares.
The expansion of service network to major hubs like Hamad International Airport and major tourism hubs of the country and free feeder service for passengers within 2 to 4 km of metro stations has increased the number of passengers. Access to Lusail City has also been made easier by the introduction of service through Legtafia station to the Lusail tram network.
During the FIFA World Cup, Metro’s boom is due to the acceptance of the fans who came to the World Cup through comprehensive measures in crowd control, traffic planning, security, safety and operational policies at the stations. Rail is preparing to implement the Blue Line as the fourth line by expanding the service to more places.
