The assassination of the Asháninka leader Santiago Contoricón

Police do not rule out that drug traffickers are behind the brutal assassination of the Asháninka leader Santiago Contoricón. He had been threatened and a bulletproof vest was found in his home.

Santiago Contoricón had the bulletproof vest, because he was already receiving threats. Members of the Police and the Prosecutor’s Office arrived at his house, located in the native community of Puerto Ocopa, in the Río Tambo district, to collect all possible evidence and find the murderers of the former Junín councilor for Satipo.

Shortly following the crime, agents from the Mazamari, Satipo, Río Negro and Pangoa police stations carried out the siege plan, which would have forced the murderers to leave behind important evidence.

The Police found weapons and a motorcycle on the route of the Puerto Ocopa – Mazamari highway. “They have thrown the motorcycle in a farm along with the weapons. A glock with a 30 ammunition magazine and a mini usi has been found”, said the major PNP Eddy Valverde.
