New Delhi: The Union Ministry of Information and Broadcasting has banned 16 YouTube news channels from India and Pakistan. 10 Indian channels and 6 Pakistani channels will be banned. The action was taken for carrying out false propaganda that might affect national security. The ministry said the channels have over 68 crore viewers.
‘They were found to be spreading false news on social media regarding national security, India’s foreign relations, communal harmony and public order. According to Rule 18 of the IT Rules 2021, none of these digital news publishers provided information to the Ministry.
Content published by some Indian channels portrayed a community as terrorist and incited hatred between different religions, the ministry said in a statement. Earlier this month, the government banned 22 YouTube channels, including four Pakistani channels, for the same reason. Last December and January, 55 YouTube channels were banned.
