The trial of Pepe Francis Haba, president of the Guinean Union for Democracy and Development (UGDD) party, continued at the Court of First Instance of Diceen on Tuesday, August 13, 2024. Haba and his co-accused are accused of “assaults and threats to public security” and have vehemently denied the facts of the charges.
The hearing began with the testimony of UGDD member Ange Kolomou, who categorically denied the allegations. Kolomou was accused of attending a meeting in Lambani to plan the release of Simon Pierre Camara, who is currently missing. Kolomou explained that he received an invitation but missed the meeting.
Joseph Maumo also testified, claiming that he attended the meeting to search for leaders who were detained at an unknown location. He noted that the police intervened before the meeting began.
Pepe Francis Haba, for his part, denies taking part in any meeting aimed at disturbing public order. He explains: “Simon Pierre’s brother told me that a meeting would take place at the party headquarters to discuss his brother, whom we had not heard of. The meeting did not even take place, but on the morning of the incident, I received an alert that a raid would be carried out by law enforcement. I immediately informed Simon Pierre’s brother, who told me that the meeting had been cancelled. When the police arrived, they knocked on my door, threatening to break it if I did not open it. That’s how I came out. They showed brutality and we were taken to the Cosa Gendarmerie and then to the Central Investigation Bureau of the National Gendarmerie, where we were interrogated until 1am. »
Defence counsel requested the provisional release of their clients, but this request was rejected by Judge Lansana Keita, and Ange Kolomou and Joseph Maomou therefore remain in detention at the Central Building in Conakry. The hearing was postponed to August 20, 2024 to allow for continued debate.
