A series of reports looking for alternatives and the reality of Korea, which is experiencing a demographic cliff, today is the story of the local youth generation.

The seriousness of the youth population outflow in the region is not yesterday, but the outflow is getting worse in areas that are relatively popular with young people.

Jeju Island, which was visited by thousands of young people every year, also saw a sharp drop in the influx of young people in just five years.

Reporter Kim Hang-seop covered the story.

Yang Eun-jung, a senior in college preparing for a job.

Although I am a native of Jeju, I am thinking of leaving Jeju ahead of getting a job.

This is because there are no jobs in the field you want in Jeju.

“I’m preparing for a job in the education or publishing industry. There are no companies like this in Jeju Island, and there are no internship opportunities…”

Conversely, the same goes for college students who came down to Jeju Island from Seoul because they like Jeju.

I am regarding to leave Jeju.

“There are few jobs, low wages, and expensive housing, so I think it’s right to get a job in Seoul, so I’m going back to Seoul.”

As a result, even if good conditions are presented, people cannot be saved, and companies are suffering as they are.

“When it comes to hiring in Jeju, the number of applicants is small and it is difficult to find people who work for a long time even following starting work.”

In fact, the net influx of young people, which had exceeded 4,000, dropped to 51 in just five years.

Half of Jeju youth cited lack of jobs as the cause.

I moved because it was a tourist destination, expecting that there would be a lot of jobs, but in reality it was not.

At this rate, the youth population of Jeju Island in 2050 is expected to decrease by 37% by 2021, regarding 100,000.

Jeju Island has invested 500 billion won over 5 years to support youth job search.

However, because of the industrial structure with many non-regular workers focused on tourism and service, the income level is at the bottom of the nation, and the phenomenon of young people leaving Jeju is becoming more and more serious.
