Thousands of Venezuelans gathered this Saturday in the central Puerta del Sol in Madrid, in a day of mobilization around the world to claim the victory of the opponent Edmundo González in the July 28 elections in Venezuela and demand his inauguration as president of the country. next January 10th.

Under the motto ‘Great global protest for freedom in Venezuela’, supporters of González and María Corima Machado, accompanied by opposition leaders from their country such as Antonio Ledezma, former mayor of Caracas, and also by Spaniards, including the leader of the conservative Party Popular Party (PP), Alberto Núñez Feijóo, took to the streets two months after the Venezuelan elections.

“Here we must move from compassionate statements to effective actions,” Ledezma said in statements to the press before beginning the event, in which he thanked the support received from national parliaments, such as that of Spain, and from international organizations such as the UN, or the OAS, but insisted: “It is time to enforce the sovereign will that is being flouted by a dictatorship.”

Ledezma, coordinator of the International Political Council of opposition leader María Corina Machado, stated that the international community “has to be present with forceful actions so that this bad example that (President Nicolás) Maduro represents is not copied by other populist leaders.”

The rally was attended by Edmundo González, candidate of the main opposition coalition in Venezuela, the Democratic Unitary Platform (PUD) in the presidential elections on July 28, whom they consider the winner, based on more than 80% of the minutes collected from witnesses. and members of tables, which the Venezuelan Government does not recognize.

González, who arrived in Spain on September 8 to request asylum, greeted everyone in attendance but could not speak because, according to Ledezma, he was suffering from hoarseness, and it was he who was in charge of reading a message from him.

In it he insisted that on July 28 the people “gave a sovereign mandate in favor of change, for peace, freedom and democracy,” he called for unity and trusted “in the power of truth, firmness and perseverance” and reiterated that they have “an unequivocal popular mandate in favor of change” and are “very close” to achieving it.

Machado also participated via the internet, who in an emotional message stated: “The end is not just that Maduro leaves power, that will happen, the end is the construction of a Venezuela that will rise.”

Representatives of all the political parties of the Venezuelan opposition were present at the rally, as well as relatives of political prisoners, and María Corina Machado’s son was also present.

Along with the demonstration in Madrid, others were held in dozens of cities in Spain, including Barcelona, ​​where hundreds of people demanded the recognition of Edmundo González Urrutia as the elected president of the Latin American country and demanded action from the International Criminal Court against Nicolás Maduro. .

“We ask the president (of the Government of Spain) Pedro Sánchez to recognize Edmundo González, together with the EU and all democratic countries, so that the world joins the Venezuelan cause that wants to end the Maduro dictatorship,” he declared. the spokesperson for the organization of the demonstration, Gerali Rodríguez, told EFE.

This protest was also carried out in some 500 cities around the world, according to María Corina Machado, in her message, in a global call.
