Snoring, poor restorative night… Sleep apnea is a very serious syndrome. But few people know that they suffer from it.

Many reasons can explain sleeping poorly or feeling tired wake. It can be insomnia, stress or recurring nightmares that disrupt the sleep cycle. However, there is a real syndrome that harms the physical and mental health of millions of people: sleep apnea.

However, a disturbing phenomenon on the subject has recently been highlighted. Indeed, French researchers conducted a large-scale study on more than 20,000 patients. If only 3.5% of volunteers had diagnosed and known sleep apnea, the reality would be much greater.

In effect, one person out of 5 on average would be affected. But the main problem is that the search for the symptom is not thorough enough. Worse still: many people experience it on a daily basis without realizing it.

A symptom influenced by several factors

As part of this study, the researchers invited volunteers to complete a specific questionnaire: the Berlin test. This is designed to assess the quality of each person’s sleep if they are potentially affected by this syndrome. Gold, estimates of those affected exceed the figure recorded at the start of the study.

Moreover, Inserm had also highlighted the possible risk factors and the overall figures concerning sleep apnea. In an article published in 2017, the institution recalls that men are more affected than women. Regarding the average age of patients, it can vary. The symptom occurs at any age, but concerns a third of those over 65.

However, Inserm also specifies that the risks of suffering from it are influenced by two elements: overweight and age. In fact, the study insists on being diagnosed because the “disease” is often unrecognized. Especially since treatments exist to relieve it.

What are the characteristics of sleep apnea?

When we sleep, our brain is in a resting phase and is “cleansed” of toxins accumulated during the day. In fact, he can recover and be operational for a new day. But in a person with sleep apnea, sleep is regularly interrupted.

On average, a person is the victim of 5 unconscious micro-awakenings per hour. This disrupts brain recovery and generates physical and mental fatigue. But the symptom also manifests itself in several other ways. Snoring very noisy are a recurring symptom. It is also common to suffer from chronic fatigue and episodes of drowsiness during the day.

However, these elements are not to be taken lightly. Ultimately, they can cause cardiovascular problems that might be avoided with appropriate care.
