Thousands of Israelis march on Jerusalem demanding a hostage deal

The protesters, including relatives of hostages held by Hamas in the Gaza Strip, are planning a demonstration outside Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s office in Jerusalem this evening.

Einav Zangauker is one of them. She is the mother of Matan Zangauker who is being held hostage in Gaza. She says she is marching on Jerusalem amid rumors that Netanyahu wants to derail a possible ceasefire deal with Hamas, which might see her son released.

– He adds demands to the ceasefire proposal that might cost Matan his life, she says to the Israeli newspaper Haaretz.

Requires an appointment

– The demands might cost the lives of several hostages. We demand that Netanyahu stop sabotaging an agreement, put all personal or political considerations aside and bring the hostages home, says Zangauker.

Several Israelis participating in the march are now worried that the Israeli attack on Khan Younis earlier Saturday might risk the ceasefire talks with Hamas breaking down.

The Israeli army (IDF) claims the attack on the outskirts of Khan Younis, which has killed at least 90 Palestinians, was aimed at the head of Hamas’s armed wing, Mohammed Deif.

A lot at stake

– We support holding Hamas accountable, but not at the expense of the lives of our loved ones and our chance to get them home, Zangauker told Haaretz.

– If Mohammed Deif is killed while there is an agreement on the table and Netanyahu does not want to accept the agreement, even though it might end the war, it means that he has given up on my Matan and the other hostages, she says.

– We are close to reaching an agreement, and this might destroy us. Stop sabotaging and give us a deal.
