New York, Jan 29 (EFE) .- More than 3,500 flights have been canceled this Saturday due to the powerful snow storm that has hit the northeastern United States since last night with temperatures well below zero degrees Celsius and strong winds.
As of 9:30 a.m. local time in New York (2:30 p.m. GMT), 3,520 flights had been canceled in the country, according to the tracking site FlightAware.
A total of 886 were canceled at the JFK airport in New York, another 556 at the LaGuardia airfield in New York and up to 608 were suspended at the Newark airport, located in the neighboring state of New Jersey.
The storm extends from the east of the state of Virginia to Maine, in the extreme northeast of the country.

Snow is expected to reach 12 inches in many areas and as much as 24 inches in places like Massachusetts, including the metropolitan area of its capital, Boston.
The authorities of the affected states have asked citizens to avoid travel.
New Jersey and New York, which have woken up covered in snow, have been in a state of emergency since last night and many services and establishments have announced that they will not open their doors today.
This last city woke up with temperatures of minus nine degrees Celsius and it is expected that the maximum will not exceed minus six.
