A semi-trailer truck stolen yesterday in Ontario containing thousands of firearms might well be on its way to Quebec, our Bureau of Investigation has learned.
According to local police, the theft occurred around 3 a.m. in the yard of a trucking company located on Parkhill East Road in Peterborough, northeast of Toronto.
In all, the heavyweight would contain nearly 3,500 .22 caliber long guns and around 6,500 magazines, according to our sources.
However, it appears the trailer did not contain ammunition, Peterborough Police said in a statement.
All Canadian police forces have been notified of the disappearance of the large shipment, which would probably be pulled by a white Freightliner Cascadia.
But the authorities have good reason to believe that the load might be in the direction of Quebec, according to our information.
A worrying flight
Even if .22 caliber firearms are typically used for hunting small game, the fact that they can be modified or sold illegally to people with bad intentions worries police sources consulted by Le Journal.
Our sources point out, however, that the thieves might have targeted the truck without knowing the contents of its trailer, the large quantity of stolen weapons being difficult to dispose of.
Remember that our Bureau of Investigation reported at the end of January that no less than 2,000 illegal firearms were currently circulating in Montreal.
