This demonstration was held in the capital at the call of the General Confederation of Portuguese Workers (CGTP) the day following a national strike by civil servants, to demand wage increases, which affected waste collection, the operation schools and hospitals.
The CGTP also calls for control of the prices of essential goods, aid to curb the rise in rents and mortgages, as well as measures to fight once morest precariousness.
7.8% inflation rate
Over the whole of 2022, the inflation rate in Portugal reached a historically high level of 7.8%, the highest for 30 years.
“We are demanding a wage increase” which is “higher than inflation and makes it possible to regain and strengthen the purchasing power of families”, declared the general secretary of the CGTP, who specified that these increases should reach “at minus 10%” and should not be “less than 100 euros”.
