Thousands of beneficiaries will be left without SNAP food stamps after these changes 2024-07-21 19:04:57

Thousands of people up to age 54, without children, might lose their Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) benefits. New changes to the program’s structure and eligibility requirements are already in the works.

According to financial expert Michael Ryan, the only way to keep SNAP payments for that age group is to work under the new work rules. These rules went into effect, as a requirement of the SNAP program, starting in October 2023.

Those who are deemed unfit for work must work to maintain their SNAP benefits.

For example, those between the ages of 16 and 59 are eligible to work. If they decide not to work, they will then stop receiving food stamps.

You should also know that if you are offered a job, you will have to accept it. Likewise, you cannot stop working without any reason or work less than 30 hours a week.

SNAP Program Exceptions

The SNAP program provides certain exceptions for these cases. These include those who work 30 hours or more per week and/or meet the work requirements for TANF or another expanded federal government program.

Those who are responsible for the care of a child under six years of age will be eligible, without requiring any work requirements. The same applies to people who suffer from a physical or mental disability.

This includes people enrolled in a treatment program to stop drinking alcohol or using drugs.

The same is true if you are enrolled in a school or participating in a training program.

Those who are between 18 and 52 years old, are able to work and do not have dependents are subject to the Adult Working Without Dependents (ABAWD) work requirement.

Finally, people between the ages of 53 and 54 must also meet these requirements as of October 1. It is mandatory to work at least 80 hours per month.
