KAKAMEGA, Kenya (AP) — Thousands of people braved the rain and cold to attend an annual bullfighting competition in western Kenya over the weekend, some of them sitting in trees or high on hills to watch an event that has become a tourist attraction.
In this area of the country, bull fights go back several decades and pit two highly prized bulls once morest each other until one of them flees.
The competition is usually preceded by a march in which the bull owners and their followers make the animals nervous. In previous editions, some spectators were gored.
Some animals are fed concoctions that include marijuana, which locals say makes them more ferocious in battle. The owners of the bulls are considered local heroes.
In the last test, which was held in two locations — Khayega and Kabras — 15 animals participated. The main attraction was a fight between the bulls Captain and Senje in which Senje won following 20 minutes.
Antony Angulu, a 32-year-old spectator, said he was excited to attend the event but was disappointed by the defeat of his favorite bull.
“We will have a rematch soon and I am sure we will win,” Angulu said.
