At times stormy atmosphere at Saint-Michel college this Monday evening. The audience of the establishment’s renovated theater room was full. More than 200 local residents came to discover the redevelopment plans for Avenue de Tervueren.

In summary, it is planned to thoroughly renovate this gateway to the capital between the Parc du Cinquantenaire and Square Léopold II. The central axis would have 2×2 lanes, unidirectional cycle paths separated from traffic will be placed on either side, the lateral ones would be maintained but reorganized, 98% of the parking would be preserved and 100 additional trees will be planted, announce the regional authorities.

A round of questions addressed to Brussels Mobility officials is enough to show: the project on the table is not unanimous. “11 million? We would do better to redo the sidewalks first,” denounces a resident. “Why not a two-way track? There was one until 1962,” says another.
“I live on the south side, on Woluwe-Saint-Pierre,” says Quentin, a local resident and member of a neighborhood committee. We were presented with a fait accompli. However, I expected real co-construction work. I just learned that my street will be completely disfigured, for better or worse, and that the direction of traffic will change.”

“It’s very ugly,” Ghislaine judges at first glance. “It doesn’t make sense to change the direction of the lateral.” “All this to prevent cars from entering Brussels,” sighs Bernadette, who fears an increase in lines on the avenue with the increase in the number of pedestrian crossings.

“An example of collaboration between municipalities and Region”
Some, on the other hand, applaud. “It’s encouraging,” says Aurèle, Sanpétrusien, referring to the multiple discords that this axis has caused in recent years. “It is an example of collaboration between municipalities and Region. They found a nice balance. This proves that we can still carry out projects in Brussels.” Very active and often acerbic, the Tervueren-Montgomery committee says it is “60%” satisfied, but deplores a lack of time upstream for analyzing the plans.

Independent municipal councilor in Woluwe-Saint-Pierre, Cathy Vaessen (ex-Ecolo) considers the project favorable for cyclists, while deploring a lack of “overall view”. “The project does not resolve the knot of Square Léopold II.”

The authorities hope to launch the work in 2025 and finish it in 2027. A deadline that makes a Schaerbeek cyclist, present in the room this Monday, jump. “I was hit by a car while I was riding my bike.” The collision took place on the south side, which was inadvertently taken in both directions. “Why wait four years to protect cyclists?” When questioned, the administration promised rapid intervention.
