The balance is difficult to obtain and maintaining it proves to be even more complex. A real feat attempted by director Taika Waititi (Thor Ragnarok, Jojo Rabbit) throughout this new adventure of the god of thunder in cinema, Thor: Love and Thunder.
Summary
- A balance in Thor
- Some “Thorments”…
- A “Thorrent” of good actors
- A thunder credits!
How to simply summarize Thor: Love and Thunder as it borrows from the various previous MCU films. For simplicity, these are botha dramatic and offbeat work. With themes as broad as illness, love, despair, horror or sadness, all with an omnipresent humor that manages not to drop the topic of the moment, Thor 4 surprises. However, the whole is rhythmic, quite often funny and offers its dose of grandiose action.
A balance in Thor
Between drama and humorous work, like the visual rendering, extremely colorful at the start and much closer to black and white at the end, Thor: Love And Thunder will amaze. First of all, he speaks to comic book fans (comics) and illness, despair or some very dark scenes can impress in a film of pure entertainment. While the overall lightness of the script and the almost burlesque side of several passages will make you smile, the film’s nemesis, Gorr, masterfully embodied by a Christian Bale in perfect mastery of the character, really explodes with his darkness and his sadness. Yes, this is a big difference, both in substance and in form.
Some “Thorments”…
If we find that the final result does not lack strength and even benefits from a certain balance, there are nevertheless some surprising discrepancies: we think first of the love between Jane Foster and Thor, not always convincing, which contrasts with the incarnation of this one in The Mighty Thor (the divinity in possession of Mjolnir, the mythical Asgardian hammer) for the best. There is also, of course, the way in which all the divine beings are shown facing those from Asgard. Their power gap is strangebut the story between them will not end there… Finally, another important element, this is an entertaining film that tackles themes that are sometimes not very innocent and this discrepancy may disconcert a certain type of public, even if, in the end, it is logical to see these subjects collide if you know the comics.
A “Thorrent” of good actors
Impossible, whatever one thinks of it, not to salute the performance of Chris Hemsworthoften offbeat to serve humor and striking in the moments when Thor, the superhero, must shine. It’s the same for Christian Bale, surprisingly credible in Gorr, the butcher god (and his corrupting necroblade which brings him his powers) who spends his time exploding the gods and goddesses. Obviously, the one everyone was waiting for at the turn, Nathalie Portman in The Mighty Thor, heiress to the powers of the son of Odin, does, not all the time, but often, wonders in this role. Effective, even in the fight scenes, his performance should seduce. Finally, let’s not forget Matt Damon (theater actor in the film), Russel Crowe (Zeus) or Chris Pratt (Star-Lord), always fun and for some, promising for the future of the MCU. In short, this cast of stars and their chemistry do not disappoint!
A thunder credits!
As usual, the post credits scenes are expected. If we will be careful not to reveal them, let us specify that there are two of them and that they approach, in their own way, two different things. First, know that the first allows you to have a vision of the future that should appeal to fans regarding the future of the franchise. Finally, the last scene is a tribute, but also a promise which will, without a doubt, make you want to better understand the universe of Thor.
In summary, Thor will be able to divide so many his themes go from one extreme to the other. The youngest will laugh at one point and possibly be a little scared followingwards. While some adults might be surprised. However, the film is particularly well paced and the talent of the actors makes it possible to take advantage of a work finally balanced and even audacious on the form. A big gap for fans of the Nordic god and his universe who should find there, no doubt, their account.
