CLEVELAND, Ohio — In a dazzling display of skill and teamwork, Thomas Worthington’s Sophia Borghese delivered an outstanding performance by netting three goals, propelling the Cardinals to a commanding 5-0 victory over Shaker Heights in the OHSAA field hockey state final held on Saturday at the esteemed Hamilton Field in Thomas Worthington.
With this latest triumph, Thomas Worthington (17-5-1) secured its impressive third consecutive state title, marking the eighth state championship in the program’s history, which positions them second only to Columbus Academy’s remarkable tally of 12 titles.
Borghese made an early impact by scoring just 1:28 into the match, showcasing her exceptional skill. She has now achieved the unique distinction of scoring the game-winning goal in overtime for the third consecutive season, solidifying her legacy with three state-winning goals over her three-year high school career. With a total of six goals in state finals, the junior and Miami University commit continues to shine as a formidable player.
The Cardinals extended their lead in the second quarter, with Casey Rowan brilliantly scoring from around 20 yards just 19 minutes into the match. A well-executed penalty corner setup resulted in Borghese’s second goal, with Jaidyn Gussler providing the assist. Borghese capped off her stellar game with a third goal at 49:01, again assisted by Meredith Estepp, before Rowan added her second goal at the 50:20 mark.
Thomas Worthington keeper Mae Conroy was virtually untroubled throughout the game, saving the only shot she faced, while Lilly King stepped in for goalkeeper duties during the fourth quarter, ensuring a solid defensive performance.
Thomas Worthington completely dominated possession of the ball, out-shooting the Raiders with a staggering 23-1 advantage. The Cardinals created numerous scoring opportunities with nine corners, while Shaker Heights managed just two. Despite the loss, Raiders’ goalie Carlie Sokal put forth a commendable effort, recording an impressive 11 saves.

**Sophia Borghese:** Thank you! Honestly, it felt amazing to be part of such a talented team. I was just focused on playing my role, but when those opportunities came, I was ready to capitalize. It was a great team effort, and I couldn’t have done it without my teammates.

**Sophia Borghese:** Teamwork was everything! We’ve trained together for so long, and that chemistry really showed in our passes and communication. We trust each other on the field, and it makes a huge difference when you’re playing for the state title. Everyone played their part, and it just clicked for us during the game.

**Sophia Borghese:** Every season has its ups and downs, but I think our toughest moments came when we faced some hard losses. Those games really tested our resolve and pushed us to improve. Instead of letting those setbacks bring us down, we used them to fuel our desire to get better. It’s a testament to our resilience as a team.
**Editor:** What are your plans for the future, both academically and in sports?
**Sophia Borghese:** I’m really excited to continue my education and hopefully play field hockey at the collegiate level. I want to keep challenging myself and grow as a player, while also focusing on my studies. It’s all about balance, and I’m looking forward to the next chapter.
