This year, Linz Festival 4020 is dedicated to the “invention of modernity”

Since 2001, the Festival 4020 has focused on contemporary music. This year, at the nine concerts from May 1st to 5th in the Brucknerhaus in Linz, the focus will be on modern anniversaries and six works will be premiered. The premiere of “Reflets de Medusa” by Linz-born Axel Seidelmann can be heard on May 4th, followed by “And now, where moonshine is” by Wels native Michael Hazod on May 5th.

In five of the nine concerts, the 2024 annual ruler – alongside Anton Bruckner – will be played: Arnold Schönberg, whose birthday is 150 years old this year. On May 4th (7:30 p.m.) the “ensemble of the XXIst century” under Peter Burwik will perform Schönberg’s “Three times seven poems from Albert Giraud’s ‘Pierrot lunaire'”. “One of the central works of the 21st century that continues to have an impact today,” says Andreas Meier, chief dramaturge at the Brucknerhaus from May 1st.

On May 5th (6 p.m.) the chamber orchestra Eroica Berlin under Jakob Lehmann will perform seven works by Charles Ives on the occasion of his 150th birthday. In addition to Schönberg and Ives, the Innviertel organist Roman Summereder has other annual regents in the program on May 2nd (7:30 p.m.): Klaus Huber (100th birthday) and Leos Janacek (170th birthday). Three free night concerts are dedicated to Luigi Nono (100th birthday) on May 1st, 3rd and 4th. The city of Linz contributes 35,000 euros, so the festival pass only costs 45 euros. “It is important to us to bring contemporary composers and musicians to the fore,” says City Councilor for Culture Doris Lang-Mayerhofer (VP).
