In a press conference from the Metropolitan Area of the Aburrá Valley, the mobility secretaries have announced the details of the new peak and plate that will govern in Medellín and the 10 municipalities of the Aburrá Valley for the second half of 2024.
This measure, which will begin to be implemented on August 5 with a pedagogical week, will maintain the same conditions as in the first half of the year, based on a technical study and not on a lottery.
For the second half of 2024, the restriction was established as follows:
– Monday: 0-2
– Mars: 6-9
– Wednesday: 3-7
– Thursday: 4-8
– Friday: 1-5
The hours of operation will be from 5:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m., in continuous hours. The restriction applies to both private vehicles and two-stroke and four-stroke motorcycles. For private vehicles, the last digit of the license plate will be used, while for motorcycles it will be the first digit.
The measure will be implemented initially with a pedagogical week, from August 5 to 9. During this week, violations of the measure will be sanctioned pedagogically. From August 12, the sanctions will be economic.
Exemptions and exempt routes
The roads exempt from the peak and plate restrictions remain, such as the Río Road System (Regional Avenue and the Southern Highway), the Las Palmas road and its link on 33rd Street and 10th Street between Regional Avenue and the Olaya Herrera Airport, in addition to the corridor to the Western Tunnel in the section parallel to the La Iguaná ravine.
Natural gas vehicles continue to be exempt and do not need to apply for the exemption from the peak and plate tax. Likewise, exemptions for hybrid or electric vehicles are maintained.
Medellín’s Mobility Secretary, Mateo González, confirmed that the rotation was done under the same conditions that had been applied during the first half of 2024, without any variation, after what was agreed at the last metropolitan meeting. According to González, the technical study for the rotation sought to ensure that no digit repeated a day of the week, thus avoiding repetition problems that occurred with the draws.
Authorities also noted that this measure is essential to improve mobility and the provision of public transport services in the metropolitan region, ensuring that exempt roads continue to operate at maximum capacity without negatively affecting traffic.
