What is known about the wild pear?

The wild pear is a tree native to Europe and Asia, one of the most common in these regions. It can reach a height of up to 20 meters, and its trunk has a diameter of up to 1 meter. The leaves have an oval shape with pointed ends and a rich green color. The tree’s flowers are white or pink, with five petals. The fruits are small pear-shaped apples that can be green, yellow or brown. Tree branches usually have thorns.

What are the beneficial properties of wild pears?

The fruit is not suitable for consumption straight from the tree because it is hard and tart and its pulp has a lumpy texture. However, when they ripen, fall and lie under a tree in the autumn sun, they become soft and sweet.

Pears contain vitamins A, C, B and PP, as well as minerals such as magnesium, potassium, phosphorus, sodium, calcium, copper, iron, iodine and boron.

The fruit also contains fruit acids (malic, citric). They are low in calories: 100 g of fruit is about 60 kcal, and their GI is 30. However, ripe pears are high in sugar, so people with diabetes, insulin resistance and overweight should be careful when consuming them.

Previously, pear decoction was used to relieve fever, lower blood pressure, and also as a cure for diarrhea and urolithiasis. It also aided digestion and accelerated wound healing. Due to the fact that fruits are easily digestible and rich in fiber, they improve digestion, support and cleanse the intestines, lighten stools and prevent diarrhea.

However, the potassium they contain has a positive effect on the functioning of the heart, muscles and circulatory system. It may also help lower blood pressure.

In turn, the content of ingredients such as iodine and boron, which are rarely found in fruits, has a positive effect on the functioning of the endocrine system and the thyroid gland.

Boron supports the functioning of the nervous system. You will also find many antioxidants in the fruit, which neutralize the effects of free radicals responsible for cell destruction.

Thanks to this, eating pears supports cell renewal processes, improves the appearance of the skin and rejuvenates it, and also reduces inflammation in the body.

What can be made from a wild pear?

Previously, wild pears were widespread, they lay in fields and farmsteads, the trees had no special requirements, so they did not need care, they grew even in difficult conditions and on infertile soils.

Due to their prevalence, they were used in almost every dish, especially in poor village households where people often experienced poverty and hunger.

They were eaten raw, salty and sweet soups were prepared from them, jam, marmalade, juices, compotes, as well as vinegar, liqueurs and wines with the addition of other fruits were made.

Nowadays, they can also be used as an additive to pancakes, oatmeal, pancakes, cakes and fruit and vegetable smoothies.

You can even add them to sandwiches or meat sauces, and bake, boil, dry, freeze, pickle or marinate in vinegar. They are also often dried to add to compote.
