On Friday, August 9, Venezuela was present in two disciplines of the Paris 2024 Olympic Games: weightlifting and wrestling, closing the day with an Olympic diploma thanks to the participation of Keydomar Vallenilla.
In addition to Vallenilla, another Venezuelan athlete who made his debut at the Paris 2024 Olympics was Anthony Montero in freestyle wrestling, who lost to Kely Douglas Dake.
Weightlifting (weight lifting)
Keydomar Vallenilla, who was Olympic runner-up at the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games, returned to Paris 2024 for weightlifting in the 89 kilogram category.
Vallenilla managed to lift 157 and 162 kilograms in the snatch, but in the third attempt he could not lift 165 kilograms. In the clean and jerk, the Creole athlete also managed to lift 190 and 196 kilograms, but failed in the 200 kilograms.
According to the Venezuelan Olympic Committee (COV)Vallenilla finished his Olympic event with a diploma after placing eighth with about 358 kilograms.
Wrestling
Anthony Montero, the 2014 Nanjing Youth Olympic silver medallist, lost 10-0 to American Kely Douglas Dake in the round of 16 at the Campo de Marte stadium.
However, Montero is not out of the competition yet, as he will depend on Dake’s results to advance to the repechage and have another chance at a bronze medal.
