On Tuesday, August 8, Venezuela was present in two disciplines of the Paris 2024 Olympic Games: athletics and weightlifting. José Maita, Julio Mayora and Anyelin Venegas participated in the competition day.

Venegas obtained the fifth Olympic diploma for the Venezuelan delegation after placing fourth.

Athletics

Venezuelan runner José Maita ended his participation in the Paris 2024 Olympic Games after competing in the repechage stages of the men’s 800-meter competition, where he placed third in his heat.

Maita, 26 years old, finished 21st overall out of 32 athletes. The bronze medalist (Pan American Games Santiago 2023) obtained a time of 1:46.44.

Weightlifting – weight lifting

Venezuelan Anyelin Venegas made her debut in her first Olympic event in Paris 2024 in the 59 kilogram weightlifting category, where she obtained fourth place. The weightlifter managed to close the start with a third attempt in which she lifted 102 kilograms, after having lifted 97 kilograms and 100 kilograms in her first and second attempts, respectively.

The Venezuelan Olympic Committee (VOC) said that for the first clean and jerk he had a valid lift of 122 kilograms, for the second he lifted 128 kilograms and in the third he failed to lift 134 kilograms.

In this sense, Venegas managed to place fourth with a total of 230 kilograms, which made her the first Venezuelan weightlifter to obtain an Olympic diploma in this edition.

Tokyo 2020 Olympic silver medalist Julio Mayora made his second Olympic debut in the 73-kilogram weightlifting category, where he was disqualified after failing his second and third attempts in the snatch and all three attempts in the clean and jerk.

In the first attempt at the snatch, the Venezuelan weightlifter managed to lift 152 kilograms. Failures in the other attempts placed him in 10th place in the competition, which was won by Indonesia, Thailand and Bulgaria.

-Raiber Rodriguez (Greco-Roman wrestling)
-Rosa Rodriguez (hammer throw)
-Yohandri Granado (TaeKwonDo 58 kilograms).

The Olympic Games, in which 33 athletes from the Venezuelan delegation are participating, began on July 26 with an opening ceremony and started with the sporting events on July 27. It is scheduled to end on August 11.
