Experts believe that potatoes, tomatoes and eggplants can be the key to beating cancer.
According to the British newspaper “Daily Mail”, Polish researchers said that studies indicated that the glyco-alkaloids compound, which is found in potatoes, tomatoes and eggplants, has some anti-cancer properties.
The researchers also theorize that the bioactive compounds in the vegetable might also help patients avoid difficult side effects of current cancer treatments.
Although chemotherapy kills cancer cells, it can lead to a host of unpleasant side effects such as hair loss, nausea, and fatigue.
This is because the drugs inadvertently kill healthy cells elsewhere in the body, in addition to targeting cancer cells.
For their part, the team reviewed the evidence on glycoalkaloids, which are abundant in eggplant, potatoes and tomatoes, and it turns out that the right doses of these chemicals can be “powerful clinical tools”.
They focused on some of the compounds, namely, glycoalkaloids, solanine, solamargine, and tomatine, and it turned out that they might be used to develop drugs in the future.
The results show that solanine is effective in limiting the effect of cancer-causing chemicals.
Research has found that solamargin can stop liver cancer cells from multiplying.
Tomatin also supports the regulation of cell cycles in the body, which helps kill cancer cells.
It is important to stress that many of these compounds would not be suitable as medicines, either because they are not effective enough or because they are not safe enough to give to people.
