What if there was a vaccine to eliminate the brain cancer ? American researchers from the Brigham and Women’s Hospital (USA) may well have found the answer! Indeed, in a study published on January 4, 2023 in the journal Science Translantional Medicine, the latter indicate that they have developed a vaccine which would be able to prevent but also to eliminate the appearance brain tumors. “Our team followed a simple idea: take cancer cells and turn them into cancer killers and vaccines,” says Khalid Shah, lead author of the study, in a communiqué.
To develop this vaccine, American scientists relied on cell therapy methods using mice with glioblastomathe most common (and very aggressive) form of brain tumor. According to the researchers, tumor cells have a specificity: they travel long distances in the brain to reach the place where other tumor cells are.
It is therefore this characteristic of cells that formed the basis of the researchers’ work. Indeed, the latter have attempted to transform these cells in question so that they become “tumour cell killers”.
Professor Khalid Shah’s team then proceeded to modify the tumor cells using a gene editing tool called “CRISPR-Cas9”. Thanks to this new treatment technique (…)
