Lindsay, Lucas and Marion were 13, Chanel 12, Ambre 11 and Thibault just 10 years old. Children. They had their lives ahead of them. However, they killed themselves, they killed themselves… This reality is unbearable. We would like to bury it in a memory hole, to be sure to forget it. But she is there. Suicide is rooted in our modern western societies.

Every year, regarding thirty children under the age of 13 commit suicide. According to the National Institute of Health and Medical Research, this high number would be underestimated. Proof of the extent of the suffering of many children, materialized by dangerous behavior and suicidal gestures which have experienced a significant increase in recent years.

The French public health agency also launched an alert in February, taking emergency visits as an indicator. Because unhappy children tend to engage in risky behaviors, such as not being careful when crossing the street or leaning dangerously at the edge of the window, they are found in pediatric emergency departments – Boris Cyrulnik describes these mechanisms in When a child kills himself (ed. Odile Jacob, 2011). These children thus want to annihilate a daily life which is nothing but suffering, especially at school.

Information and awareness

Work in neuroscience has thus shown the links between early sensory isolation, from the first months of life, and the development of what specialists call a “borderline disorder” (borderline personality disorder, in English). For lack of having able to reinforce the adequate neural circuits, a child born in the world in an impoverished sensory environment becomes incapable of inhibiting a strong emotion. He cannot prevent the passage to the act. Children who have experienced a succession of small early traumas (isolation, aggression, etc.) can thus commit suicide very young.

However, this type of suicidal crisis is not inevitable. Real answers exist, beyond media gestures of the white march type: information leaflet or awareness of harassment and social networks in the classroom, as proposed by the former Minister of National Education Pap Ndiaye.

Scientific work has shown that we can provide the youngest with the tools to overcome these emotional deficiencies that paralyze them in the management of deep stress, by taking measures. Around birth, first, by striving to avoid all maternal stress and by ensuring emotional stability during early interactions. This implies parental leave for the mother and father in order to structure a sensory niche.
