This Tuesday, joint work between Plan Sumar and the Program against Synthetic Drugs in the Southern Cone will be launched

Asuncion, IP Agency.- The Government of Paraguay and the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) will officially launch the joint work between the Action Plan once morest Drug Abuse (SUMAR) and the Program once morest Synthetic Drugs in the Southern Cone (DROSINSUR) on Tuesday. The event will take place from 8:30 a.m. at the Central Bank of Paraguay (BCP).

President Santiago Peña, the regional representative of UNODC for the Andean Region and the Southern Cone, Candice Wesch, the Minister of the Interior, Enrique Riera, and authorities from the institutions that make up the Sumar Plan will participate.

On this occasion, they will ratify the technical support alliance that will allow strengthening the comprehensive approach promoted by the Sumar Plan for action once morest drug abuse.

On July 17, 18 and 19, UNODC will lead a workshop on strategic and comprehensive approaches to address the challenges posed by synthetic drugs and new psychoactive substances, including synthetic opioids. This represents the first activity promoted between the Government of Paraguay and UNODC on the subject.

Welsch said this is a step forward in building effective responses to the challenges facing the region regarding synthetic drugs.

Authorities from the Ministries of Education and Science, Public Health and Social Welfare, Interior, as well as Senad, who lead each axis of this plan implemented by the Government of Paraguay, will present the progress and strategies of the Sumar Plan. It includes, for the first time, joint and coordinated work by more than 22 State institutions to confront this scourge.

According to the National Anti-Drug Secretariat, the circulation of synthetic drugs in Paraguay is increasing. Authorities have identified that new psychoactive substances are frequently marketed as other drugs or mixed with them, which poses a significant risk to public health.

The SUMAR Plan establishes a strategic approach and is structured around three lines of action: prevention of drug use, treatment and rehabilitation of users for social reintegration and combating drug trafficking.

Synthetic drugs and new psychoactive substances pose evolving challenges for law enforcement agencies, criminal justice, prevention and treatment actors, health systems and decision makers.

UNODC’s experience and presence throughout the Andean region and the Southern Cone will strengthen Paraguay’s efforts to implement tools aimed at responding to the challenges posed by illegal drug markets in the country.

The UNODC Programme once morest Synthetic Drugs in the Southern Cone is supported by the United States Government’s Bureau of International Narcotics and Law Enforcement Affairs (INL). It seeks to strengthen strategic and comprehensive approaches to counter illicit drug markets by enhancing institutional responses to the challenges posed by synthetic drugs and new psychoactive substances.
