iFixit offers its disassembly of the new MacBook Air M2 and reveals to us in passing the elements present in the machine.
That’s it, the MacBook Air M2 is finally in the hands of the public and a first teardown from iFixit reveals a few things we didn’t know regarding until now.

At the component level, we already knew that the version with 256 GB of storage of the MacBook Air M2 only uses a single NAND chip for memory. That limits the speed of its SSD which can then be up to 50% slower than on other models.
This MacBook Air M2 also includes other components like a Thunderbolt 3 driver, a Bluetooth and Wi-Fi USI chip and, more surprisingly, an accelerometer. Why an accelerometer? We will have to learn it one day.
Apple trusts its system temperature
Regarding cooling, this disassembly does not reveal the presence of any heat sink, which might partly explain the higher temperatures detected on the machine. According to iFixit, the chassis used on this new MacBook Air is lighter than the previous one. Apple may have wanted to keep the weight of the machine down by not integrating an additional cooling solution, even if it results in a quicker drop in revs.
This lack of passive cooling can cause it to lose some of its performance over time and this is confirmed by the MacBook Pro M2 which contains a fan. Thanks to this, it obtains performances in multi-core up to 25% higher during sustained tasks.
A MacBook with a bigger, slightly easier-to-repair battery
This MacBook Air seems to help a little more with the repair since it incorporates as on the MacBook Air M1 adhesive strips to easily remove the battery from the chassis. The latter is seen increasing in capacity from 49.9 Wh on the MacBook Air M1 to 52.6 Wh on the MacBook Air M2, which allows it to reach the announced autonomy.
The ports on this MacBook also don’t appear to have been glued in place and can simply be replaced when disassembled, which includes the MagSafe port, headphone jack, and two USB-C ports. Likewise, the Touch ID button is detachable without any problem, all of which makes this PC a little more flexible.
