Elcogen, producer of green hydrogen (United Kingdom/Estonia) and Convion, manufacturer of solid oxide electrolysers (Finland) have just concluded the long-term trial of the electrolyser they co-developed. Total success, since its performance is far superior to that of other equipment equipped with different technologies.
Most of the production of green hydrogen is carried out using electrolysers powered by renewable energy sources. To date, three technologies have been developed by different players in the sector: Proton Exchange Membrane (PEM) electrolysers, Alkaline electrolysers and Solid Oxide Electrolysers (SOEC).
They all produce hydrogen, but with more or less efficiency and above all at different costs (initial investment and operation). The SOEC model, co-developed by Elcogen et Convionwould consume 20% to 30% less electricity than alkaline or PEM models.
Indeed, following a test of more than 2,000 hours of their solid oxide electrolyzer on a green hydrogen production site, the two protagonists are enthusiastic. Alternating between steady-state operation and 1,000 rapid power cycles, it was found to consume only 39 kWh of electrical energy per kilogram of green hydrogen produced. Or an electrical efficiency greater than 85%.
