The Amber Yantar, a new Russian prototype, has been named “The Electric Carcugliest boner ever” due to its strange and unattractive design. Indeed, its design has attracted a lot of criticism, with some saying it would beat the Fiat Multipla in this regard.
Electric car prototypes usually have an eye-catching design that captures the imagination of onlookers. Even if the vehicle that arrives on the production line turns out to be very different, or never enters production. Moreover, prototypes are an exciting way to present an automobile brand’s vision of the near future. But it’s not always the case. Take the example of the new Amber Yantar, a prototype electric vehicle designed by Avtotor, in collaboration with the Moscow Polytechnic Institute. Revealed to the public very recently, this vehicle has already become a subject of mockery on the Internet.
Avtotor Amber, this Russian electric car sparks controversy online
Shortly following its reveal to the public, Avtotor Amber has already become the ridiculed by Internet users. Moreover, critics point out its flaws, such as tiny headlightss which give it a chilly appearance. Furthermore, its rather unusual proportions, lack of rear window and toy-like wheels leave much to be desired. Of the images of l’Avtotor Amber have widely circulated on social networks, arousing mockery and skepticism.
One netizen joked that “all of Russia’s designers have left the country” and that the Avtotor Amber was going to become the car the least attractive in history. Another mocking comment points out that it looks like “a car without a license, in a less attractive version”.
One of the main pitfalls is that Moscow Polytechnic University, which is supposed to sponsor the vehicle, has not provided any information regarding it. There was no no message regarding the car on the university’s website or social media accounts, which seems unusual for a highly anticipated concept car.
Critics suggest that the vehicle’s distinctive design may have come from the use of commercially available parts. These might come from various existing Russian vehicles.
The final design will undergo some changes
Avtotor announced plans to start producing up to 50,000 Yantar electric cars in 2025 at its Kaliningrad factory. This is known for manufacturing certain Hyundai, BMW and Kia vehicles for the Russian market. The brand adds that all major components – electric motor, inverter, control panels and batteries – will all be designed and manufactured in Russia. Note that such claims have already been made by Russian automakers in the past. However, they all ended up working with Chinese components.
Regarding the Actotor Yantar, very few technical details have been revealed regarding this electric car. It will be very affordable and will reach a maximum speed of 105 km/h.
However, upon seeing the car, few were interested in the technical aspect. Avtotor is currently trying to save face by claiming that Yantar will have a totally different design during its production, presenting the current model as a prototype. However, this raises the question of the relevance of presenting such a prototype initially.
