The PS5 has a limited storage space of 667 GB which can be quickly saturated in the face of recent titles which always weigh more and more heavily. To extend it, it is possible to add a second internal SSD in the console, the models on sale are not all compatible but the WD_Black SN850X is indeed. At the moment, this NVMe SSD is at its lowest price on Amazon, at 89.95 euros instead of 111.99 euros in its 1 TB version.
When it was released, the PS5 was widely criticized for its limited storage space, but Sony has since remedied this issue by adding the ability to install a second NVMe SSD in the console. The latter must however meet several prerequisites on its interface, its speeds or its dimensions. The WD_Black SN850X ticks all the boxes, but it is above all at its lowest price on Amazon in its 1 TB version.
The WD_Black SN850X in a few points
Sequential read speeds of up to 7300 MB/s Heatsink included Fully compatible with PS5
Instead of the usual 111.99 euros, the WD_Black SN850X (1 TB — with heatsink) is now available on sale at 89.95 euros at Amazon. It had never come down to such a low price as this screenshot shows.
Among the best SSDs in PCIe 4.0 interface
The WD_Black SN850X ticks all the boxes to fit into the PS5, but you still need to know how to go regarding installing it. Do not panic ! Frandroid’s editorial staff has concocted this tutorial which explains how to install an NVMe SSD in the slot provided for this purpose and transfer your games to it. Once the work is done, it becomes possible to take advantage of its TB of storage, i.e. 1000 GB, as well as its mind-blowing speeds.
For an NVMe SSD to be compatible with the PS5, it must be in PCIe 4.0 interface in order to ensure a minimum threshold in terms of speeds. Indeed, Sony recommends a minimum read speed of 5500 MB/s so that the SSD can keep pace with the console. This is not a problem for the WD_Black SN850X which offers a read speed of 7300 MB/s and a write speed of 6350 MB/s. We are close to the maximum that a PCIe 4.0 SSD can offer.
A heat sink to stay cool
One of the strengths of the WD_Black SN850X is that it includes a heat sink by default, this device makes it easier to evacuate the heat by increasing the surface of the SSD without compromising its performance. This is not the case with the intelligent thermal controller, which performs thermal throttling, which means that the flows are slowed down in order to limit the rise in temperature. For use on PS5, a heatsink on an SSD is a must-have.
Finally, the WD_Black SN850X, like the SN850, stands out from the competition thanks to its game mode which can be activated via the Dashboard Center (only if the SSD is used on a PC). This game mode brings small optimizations to the performance of the SSD during video game sessions such as a maximum reduction of latency and better management of the flow according to the heating (which is useless since there is already a heat sink ).
